“Meow, meow? MEOW!”
When a cat starts to jibber-jabber a steady stream of meows, what the heck does it mean?
Trying to figure out what your feline friend is saying or thinking is like deciphering hieroglyphics.
If you always wanted to be privy about your cat’s chatter, now, with a few mouse clicks, those meows will have meaning — sort of.
‘Meow Talk,’ a popular app that’s been downloaded on Google Play more than 5 million times, claims it translates the meows from any breed of cat by studying sound samples of a cat meowing. Next, the app compares the sound samples with sound information Meow Talk has on file, and finally, it is matched with one of several moods that felines have.
These moods include happy, hungry, leave me alone, resting, and give me attention.
The big question with Meow Talk is — does it work?
According to my friend Holly Mitchell and with the assistance of her cat Savanah, Meow Talk seemed to be on point sometimes and totally off the mark at other times. However, my friend would recommend this app to feline fans of all ages because it’s quirky.
“It was a goofy thing to play around with; it’s interesting to see how many times it seems to be correct,” said Mitchell. “The benefit I liked most about Meow Talk is that it felt like I had a closer bond with Savanah. I’ve had her for five years and learned long ago if she wants something to eat or to be left alone just by her body language. It’s easy to understand she wants to play when she drops one of her toys in front of me and then just sits there. Using the app just made me feel I understand her a bit better.”
I would have tried Meow Talk with my cat Bravehart, but he is very aloof and only meows a single meow once or twice a day. However, it’s almost certain if Bravehart did actually talk, he would have that regal-sounding voice that sounded like Richard Burton.
Now, if they could only create an app that explains why cats can be so aloof, so fussy, or just plain goofy.
It would also be nice to know why you can’t train a cat, but a cat can sure train its person.
