There are several local events honoring Memorial Day in our area. If you would like to honor those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country this Memorial Day, please join one of these events.
The Nippenose Valley Memorial Day Services will be held, Sunday, May 29, at the Oval Cemetery beginning at 1:30 p.m. The speaker will be the Rev. Max Furman, pastor of the Antes Fort/Oriole United Methodist Churches. The Fairplay Brass will perform. In case of rain the service will be held in the Oval United Methodist Church. All are welcome to attend.
The 2022 Salladasburg Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony. The parade will start at 11:00 a.m. on Memorial Day. Participants in the parade include patriotic floats or decorated vehicles, antique cars and tractors, kids on decorated bicycles, riding horses, Scout Troops, Little League Teams and military service members.
Those that want to be part of the parade should be in line on Dochter St. before 10:45 a.m. The parade will be led by the Jersey Shore Area High School Marching Band and will also include fire engines from both Jersey Shore fire companies. Immediately following the parade there will be a ceremony to honor the local veterans. The ceremony will take place in the Salladasburg United Methodist Church Parking lot. Dr. Daniel Glunk will recite Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address and then the roll call of the veterans will be read by Mayor Douglas Ellsworth, followed by Taps and a 21-gun salute by The Jersey Shore Honor Guard.
The Annual Civil War Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Day Ceremony, sponsored by the 11th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, N-SSA, is a fitting tribute to the brave local veterans who served during the Civil War. The approximately 45-minute ceremony includes a Union Army observance, cannon salute, and the decorating of graves with flowers. Bring a lawn chair if desired and please avoid parking in the Circle. The event will take place, Monday, May 30, 2022 at 9 a.m.at the G. A. R. Circle in Wildwood Cemetery, Williamsport. Follow the signs on the same side as the Chapel/Office.
There will be a Memorial Day Service on Saturday, May 28th at 11:00 a.m. at Lycoming County Veterans Memorial Park, 3401 West Fourth Street, Williamsport. This will also include the dedication of the Gold Star Families Monument.
There will be a Memorial Day Mass on May 30 in the St. Boniface Cemetery (Penn & Wyoming Streets) at 9 a.m. Please bring a chair. Refreshments will be provided after the service. In case of inclement weather, the Mass will be in St. Boniface Church and refreshments will be served in the elementary school gym.
Memorial Day March for the Fallen: Leo Knight-Inglesby, United States Air Force Master Sergeant, notes, “I have been serving in the Williamsport Community for just under two years now. I invite you to join me as I travel around the Riverwalk in Williamsport, PA to be a part of a living memorial in remembrance of our fallen and captured military heroes on May 30th, 2022 at 0900. Since the Vietnam War, over 66,000 service members have fallen in combat in support of the freedoms we enjoy today with an additional 1,590 still missing. Honoring the fallen through purposeful steps is an act of gratitude that humanizes the loss of our military members and fosters healing. This Memorial Day, we will learn their stories, speak their names, and honor their legacies.
“To honor those who have fallen and those who have yet to come home, I will be walking the 3.33 mile loop from the Market Street Bridge to the Maynard Street Bridge around the Susquehanna Riverwalk in Williamsport, PA. I encourage you to join me in-person or virtually on Memorial Day. Additionally, I encourage all participants to donate to the Wounded Warrior Project as we remember together, learn their stories, speak their names, and honor the legacies of our Nation’s fallen. The Muncy American Legion Memorial Day Parade has returned after being cancelled the past two years due to COVID. Join Monday, May 30th! The Parade will begin at 11:00 a.m. (Forming at 10:00 a.m.) at East Mechanic Street & Basil’s parking lot and traveling up Main Street to East Penn Street and ending at the Muncy Cemetery.
The observance of Memorial Day is a traditional occasion in rural Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, and the Cherry Grove Cemetery Association realizes the importance of honoring the people who sacrificed all for our great country.
The annual service at Cherry Grove is among the oldest continuing Memorial Day observances in Sullivan County. The Cherry Grove Cemetery Association, organized 100 years ago in 1922, will conduct their annual service on Sunday, May 29th, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the cemetery on SR 2003 above Nordmont.
Prior to the service, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., a delicious ham dinner will be provided by St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in the Nordmont Community Hall. Cost will be $12.00 per person.
Services will be held outside the chapel. All are welcome to attend! Please invite your family and friends! Please bring your own chairs for those who wish to sit during the service.
A time-honored tradition is for families to place a red geranium on the grave of a loved one in the cemetery as a beautiful tribute of remembrance. Anyone interested in purchasing a geranium in perpetual care please contact Lewis Peterman as 203.249.1399.
Lewis C. Peterman, board member of the Association, will serve as master of ceremonies welcoming everyone to the service.
Melanie Norton, Director of the Sullivan County Historical Society and its museum since 2004, will be the speaker. Through Melanie’s research projects and efforts, knowledge of Sullivan County’s history and its people have grown tremendously. The museum now has over 800 genealogies and has an extensive background concerning the cemeteries within Sullivan County.
The Sullivan County High School Band directed by Jason Sandonato will play patriotic selections during the service.
Following the service, members of the Sonestown American Legion, Nelson Armes Post 601, under the command of Commander Jay Myers, will conduct military services at the gravesite of a veteran.
Burial lots are for sale in the “C” section (at the top of the cemetery). Geraniums may be purchased in perpetual care from the Cherry Grove Association for a loved one. Please contact Lewis Peterman at 203.249.1399.
Individuals may provide for future upkeep of the cemetery and chapel with a bequest in their final arrangement/will or other donations.
