Comparatively quiet since the end of the Korean Conflict, local draft boards are steadily increasing the tempo of their activities as the war in Vietnam accelerates.

Williamsport and Lycoming boards are typical.

October draft calls for city and county have designated 31 men for induction into the armed forces. Another 87 will be called for pre-induction examinations.

Of these, Selective Board 99, (which serves all of the county outside of Williamsport) has received a call for 15 for induction and 56 for pre-induction. The city board Local 100 has a call for 17 for induction and 31 for pre-induction.

All are scheduled to report October 18 at the Armed Forces at the New Cumberland Depot.

The names of those who will report are drawn from the Selective Service files of those classified 1A. This classification includes men not eligible for deferments through attending school, being a father or working in a critical occupation or other reasons specified by law.

Names are drawn of the oldest ones first, with the current oldest maximum age being 26. At present, 19-year-olds are being called. Those who pass pre-induction examination are available for the subsequent induction call.

The local draft boards, made up of six businessmen — three on each board — are responsible for classifying registrants on the basis of information from questionnaires, schools, employers and other sources. They meet once a month to classify and re-classify registrants.
