Williamsport Sun: August 10, 1925 – Bearded Lady Who was Loaned Money When Stranded in City Finds Law’s Memory is Good

Officer John D. Andrews “bearded” the “bearded lady” in her “den” at the carnival last week, and secured an order for money, which was owed to a local welfare agency for two years.

Two years ago, the bearded lady was stranded here with a carnival company which went broke. She appealed to Miss Minnie Y. Taylor, the general secretary of the Social Service Bureaus, for enough money to pay her railroad fare to her home. The money was advanced with the understanding that it was to be repaid as soon as she obtained work.

Nothing more was heard from her until last year when she was with a show that played Williamsport. Failing to obtain the money, Miss Taylor went to the police and Officer Andrews was sent to get it. The bearded lady was strong in her promises to pay the money, as the matter was allowed to rest until one morning the authorities had found she had left town. Still no money for the Social Service Bureau.

Johnny J. Jones Shows came to the city last week and with them came the bearded lady. This year a stronger vigilance was maintained with the result that Officer Andrews camped on her doorsill until he obtained an order on the management for her pay in the amount borrowed.
