Williamsport Gazette and Bulletin: July 5, 1943 – Quiet Celebration Marks Fourth of July in City – Rains Spoils Many Events

Williamsport’s observance of the Fourth of July was quiet, rain curtailing many programs that been arranged for Sunday and spoiling outdoor picnics and parties. Monday, however, clear skies permitted the Faxon celebration and some events planned by other groups.

Despite the refrain from traveling over the holiday weekend, trains and buses were jammed to capacity.

The storm Sunday caused the transfer of the 40 and 8 rally from Brandon Park to the Capitol Theater, where the complete program was presented before only a small audience.

The Summer Choir School ceremonies scheduled for Dickinson Junior College athletic field in conjunction with the program by Aviation Cadet candidates were moved to the Clarke Memorial Chapel and held before a large audience.

Missing this year were fireworks displays. An occasional blast here and there through the city indicated some had either managed to save or buy a few firecrackers. In the evening a few blazing flares of the style used by railroads, were the only reminders of the magnificent displays of pre-war celebrations.

While most persons stayed at home Sunday, many were swimming or walking Monday when the weather cleared. Automobile traffic appeared to be slightly heavier than usual over the weekend.
