Williamsport Sun: April 21, 1915 – Chief George Harder Gets ‘Some’ Uniform

Of many handsome men who have been chiefs of police of Williamsport about the handsomest is George W. Harder. This is said without mental reservation or evasion in mind whatsoever. Without unnecessary apologies to Charlie Bathurst, Charlie Evans, Captain Russell, Ellis Wise, or any of the others who used to look so pretty when they put their best togs on and strutted forth on big days and because in recent years the police uniform of Williamsport has changed for the better, Chief Harder is incomparably the best dressed of the bunch and he’s mighty careful of his duds.

If a patrolman wants to get in bad with the chief just let him become careless of his attire. He’ll hear about it p.d.q.

One of these fine days there will be an order sent out for new clothes for the policemen. The standard this year is to be the Philadelphia standard. The chief has said so himself. What he says generally goes. Down in Philadelphia they doll the cops up some, you bet, and granddaddy Billy Penn grins his approval from his perch 500 feet up.

Some time ago a mighty smooth salesman appeared in town with a sample case and a tape measure. He wanted an order for police uniforms. He saw the chief and stated his case. He told him that another house had been tailoring the police uniforms for many a day, but no matter who got the job this year everything must be up to Philadelphia standards.

So, the salesman, who was a smart man, took the chief’s measurements so in case the new order filtered his way the house would have it. This sounded right and the chief let the salesman measure all of his beautiful curves.

There arrived with the bill under another cover a uniform that was the last word in Philadelphia style. It is a dream. A sartorial triumph. It has gold embroidered shoulder straps just like the one worn by the Philadelphia superintendent of police when he passed in review before the mayor and director of public safety and sees everyone grin from ear to ear.  Chief Harder’s uniform is all wool and a yard wide. There is gold braid on it. There’s gold plated buttons on it. It’s the dandiest uniform that ever came down here. Chief Harder scanned the bill and didn’t know whether he would keep it or not. The uniform might have been a surprise to the mayor. But now darn it, the “Sun” has let the cat out of the bag.
