Jack L. Coleman, Sr., 83, of Williamsport entered his eternal resting place Wednesday, March 24, 2021. He was greeted at the gates of heaven by his parents, wife, two beloved sons, and a brother.
Born July 18, 1937 in Williamsport he was a son of the late Robert W. Coleman, Sr. and Irene (Bradley) Mitchley.
Jack was a 1955 graduate of Williamsport High School. He married his loving wife, Roberta L. “Bertie” (Wahler) Coleman on December 10, 1955 and together they shared 61 years before her passing on February 10, 2017. Jack and Bertie were longtime members of Garden View Church of Christ where he served as an Elder.
A talented carpenter, Jack started Schriner and Coleman Construction in the early 60’s. In the mid 80’s he became the successful proprietor of Coleman Construction Company, a family business which he proudly passed onto his son to continue his legacy of hard work, dedication and community involvement. Additionally, Jack also served as the Woodward Township Zoning Officer and township supervisor for many years.
Jack joined the Newberry Lions Club in 1982 and has been a member for the past 39 years. He was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, served as a past-president, treasurer and for the past 20 years occupied the secretary role for the club. You could often find Jack volunteering at Newberry Lions events and enjoying the company of his fellow Lions.
A man who enjoyed the outdoors and camaraderie of others, Jack was also a lifetime member of the East End Hunting Club. He served as past president of this club and spent many days working at camp, hunting and being with family and friends, especially during the second week of Buck season.
One of Jack’s favorite pastimes was camping especially at Stony Fork campground for the past several years where he made many friends who he considered to be like family.
Always a sports fan, Jack enjoyed watching Penn State Football and was a volunteer baseball coach and umpire. He played fast-pitch softball in the over 40 league and enjoyed bowling at Harvest Moon, where he was a sponsor and the secretary of the Monday Classic Bowling League.
A man like no other, Jack had a way with words and a special demeanor with his pipe in hand. His personality could light up the room and he will always be remembered for his quick wit, corny jokes, and lengthy conversations.
Surviving are his children, Dion L. Coleman (Mary Lou) of Trout Run and Glenda L. Wheeler (Bobby) of Morris; one granddaughter, three grandsons, one great-grandson; his companion, Connie Tallman of Williamsport; and numerous extended family members and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by two sons, Jack L. Coleman, Jr. on October 18, 2017 and Ronald L. Coleman on December 9, 2018, and a brother, Robert “Bob” Coleman.
A memorial service to honor Jack’s life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, April 3 at Garden View Church of Christ, 1941 Princeton Ave., Williamsport. A time of visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Saturday at church. Please adhere to social distancing and mask wearing guidelines.
