The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., has announced a new virtual family program starting in March, the Little Red Hen Baking Club.

This is a fun baking club that participants can do from the comfort of their own home. Once a month, families will make simple yeast breads in a bag. All the kneading will strengthen and develop the muscles in your child’s hands needed to become writers. If your child is already a writer, then you can practice your writing by filling in the recipe review card.

The program will be presented by Nina White, children’s librarian. Families will be asked to submit a photo of them preparing, eating, or reviewing their hard work via Flipgrid or email.

This program requires registration to reserve a baking kit. Little Red Hen kits will be become available beginning the second Friday of each month, from March 12 through June 11. One kit per family, and the baking club is limited to 20 families.

This program supports the PA Forward statewide initiative to help children improve their command of basic literacy. Basic literacy is a skill that provides the ability to read, write, speak and listen with comprehension at all levels of life.

The James V. Brown Library is open for browsing and holds pick up from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
