After having been on hunger strike for four days in the Union County jail, Nevin Catherman finally secured bail for his release last week. He was charged with obtaining potatoes for his potato chip plant in Sunbury from farmers in the locality of Lewisburg under false pretenses. He was re-arrested Saturday night on two more similar charges and was forced to furnish additional bail. In all, a total of $3,500 has been furnished by relatives for his release until criminal court, when he will face seven charges of this same nature. 

Six of the charges of obtaining goods under false pretenses are lodged by Union County authorities and a detainer has been placed against him has been placed by Northumberland County authorities. 

During his four days in the county jail, Catherman refused all proffered food. His only nourishment was a soft-boiled egg which he accepted just before he was released on bail. 

He is a well- known resident of Lewisburg and some time ago took over a flourishing potato chip business started by his father, who was one of the town’s most highly respected citizens. He recently conducted his business in Sunbury, although he continued to secure potatoes for his plant from farmers in Union County for the most part. 

He was arrested recently by Sheriff Lester Crabbe and was given a hearing by justice of the peace Shaughnessey. Following his alleged taking of potatoes from a nearby farm without paying for them. After his arrest, six other similar charges accumulated against him and $500 for each charge was set for his release.
