Highway projects underway in Lycoming County at a total cost of $3 million were toured Wednesday by directors of the Lycoming County Automobile Club as guests of the Pennsylvania Department of Highways. 

The tour, 93 miles long, concerned the eastern and northcentral portions of the county. 

A major stop was an on-foot visit to new parts of the highway surface that is to eliminate the dangerous Powys Curve. 

At one point, the motor club members saw the results of the 160-foot cut through solid rock. They also visited the almost-completed bridge over railroad tracks and the bridge over Lycoming Cree, near the southern end of the new highway.

Most of the new route is two-lane, but the bridge and shoulders are being built on the road can be widened to four lanes when needed. The Powys section is expected to open for use about December 1. 

The trip was made under the leadership of C. Owen Beckley, district engineer of the Pennsylvania Department of Highways. 

The second section between Powys and Trout Run is in the rough grading stage. It was explained that the contractor has brought in extra equipment and is working extra time in an effort to have that portion completed before Winter weather arrives. 

Good progress on the rebuilding of the North Market Street-Balls Mill road for 3.2 miles was noted. The northern part of this project will eliminate the hairpin turn at the top of the hill near the intersection with the east-west road from Northway Road. 

The motor club directors were taken over the new highway bypassing Pennsdale, a portion of the widened and resurfaced road to Millville, and the improved section of Route 115 east of Hughesville toward Lairdsville.
