Williamsport’s complete new directory, containing four new features, is off the press this week. It is a volume of 1,072 pages — 162 pages thicker than the 1936 edition — covering Williamsport, South Williamsport, DuBoistown, Montoursville and the surrounding rural routes and is published by the R.L. Polk Company, as Boyd’s Williamsport City Directory.
The publishers have inaugurated three new services in the street section of the new directory. A symbol denotes owner occupied houses, distinguishing them from rental properties. A number after the name of each householder denotes the total population of the house, including minors, whose individual names are not listed in the directory. Also, after the name of the householder the telephone number is shown, if there is a telephone in the house. These features have been started in answer to the public demand of the times, the publishers said.
Also the publishers have included a new department — a section on colored paper listing telephone subscribers in numerical order according to their telephone numbers.
An important new service started here recently by the Polk organization is the Directory Library installed a few weeks ago in the offices of the Williamsport Community Trade Association. This library is a branch of a chain maintained throughout the United States and Canada by the members of the North American Directory Publishers on an exchange basis A number of new editions are on field here for the reference use of the business man and the general public and new editions will arrive as they are published. As usual the latest Williamsport Directory will be distributed to other branches of the Directory Library.
Williamsport’s diversity is indicated by 438 different kinds of commercial, industrial and professional enterprises listed in the directory. This represents an addition of 38 groups in the last year.
