Family Fun Month

Obviously, this hasn’t been a typical summer, but August is Family Fun Month and I think that we all deserve to celebrate!

So, with everything going on in the world, what are some fun ways to celebrate the winding down of summer with family? I’ve got some ideas for you!
Spend a Day in Nature

Pack a picnic and a Frisbee and head to your local park for a day of fun in the sun. As your day winds down, have every family member pick up five pieces of trash to help keep the area clean and beautiful for the next pack of picnickers to enjoy.
Plant a Late-Season Garden

Inspire your kids’ budding green thumbs by planting a late-summer vegetable garden. Carrots, broccoli and cauliflower all do well when planted this month. Being able to watch the fruits of their labor flourish will inspire family members to eat more veggies and start conversations about food literacy.
Collect Items for a Shelter

Inspire your kids to start the new school year off with a clean slate by donating their gently used clothes and toys to a local shelter. Drop off the donations as a family to teach kids how their treasured wares can bring happiness to other children when shared. Be sure to check with each individual shelter to see what items they’re most in need of.
Set Up a Lemonade Stand
The tried-and-true summer staple is a great way to meet your neighbors and spend some time in the sunshine before winter’s chill creeps in. Pick a cause that’s important to your family and donate the proceeds of your sweet sales to charity! Remember to let your customers know where their money is going with a homemade sign!
Plan a Camping Trip

There’s no better way to get kids and adults to disconnect from technology and social media for family bonding than by taking them to the great outdoors for a good ole’ fashioned camping trip. Often times families can get so busy in their individual lives that the isolation of outdoor activities like camping can really bring a group together to bond in new ways. If you’re not able too venture to far from home, consider a simple backyard camp out.
Weekly Movie or Game Nights

Having a weekly activity planned for the month assures that everyone is able to regularly gather to enjoy each other’s company. Whether you choose to play a board game or watch a family friendly movie, scheduled activities like these can develop into family traditions that your kids come to cherish as they get older.

Other Easy Activities

• Order pizza and watch a movie in the backyard
• Go out for ice cream
• Enjoy a backyard campfire
• Build a backyard fort
• Family bike ride
• Day trip to the zoo
• Fishing
• Hiking
• Make a talent show
• Cook meals together
• Have a karaoke night

No matter what you do to celebrate, take a moment to appreciate your family and the time you are able to spend with them! Kids grow up really fast and they may not always want to spend Family Fun Month with you, so enjoy it while you can!
