Former Local Woman Who Works In Television and Film Industry Describes How COVID-19 Shutdown Is Affecting Her and Others

In March, Webb Weekly brought you the story of one former local woman, Trina Siopy, who works in the television and film industry and is currently the co-producer of the critically and popularly regarded cable series “Better Call Saul.” We thought it might be interesting to find out from Trina how the COVID-19 situation was affecting her and her colleagues.

Trina sent us a dispatch about what things are like for her now, and what follows is her account of that.

“I will just start at the beginning.

“One day away from starting a new production that I was really excited about. I had a feeling it was coming, and it did. The call came from the show that we were shutting down. They told us it would be for two weeks, and then they would reassess. Two weeks later, the call came that we were staying down and would keep reevaluating every two weeks. They stopped calling after that.”

She continued, “Here we are three months later and no sign of starting up anytime soon. I am one of the lucky ones to be able to file for unemployment and have my husband, who can also claim. That makes us able to keep the bills paid. I know others are not so fortunate. Because I was not working yet, I was also already in the system, which also made it very easy. Some of my fellow film workers were working when they got shut down and had a really hard time filing with the thousands of others in New Mexico.

“How long will this last? I’m not sure. We work in a tricky business to practice social distancing. With the actors, crew, and background, we are sharing space everywhere and for many hours. I know the studios are in the works with what needs to happen for us to go back to shooting. I’m very interested to see how it pans out and if it will be different indefinitely.

“Personally, how am I taking this? Of course, I want to get back to work, back to what I love to do. I tend to try and look on the bright side of things. I’m constantly working, and we work such long hours and many times wished for a break or to spend time at home, which I rarely see. I’m getting that now. It is unfortunate that this happened, but I’ll make the best of it. Time with my husband, who also works in film and usually on a different show, which means different schedules and rare times to even eat dinner together. So many others are worse off, so how could I complain? I take it in stride and hope for the best. Enjoy what you have in the moment.”
