Memorial Day is meant to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our Country.

Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of an organization of Union veterans — the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) — established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be observed on May 30. It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country.

As you enjoy your long weekend, take some time to give thanks for those who gave their lives, so you have the freedom to BBQ, and enjoy time with your friends and family.

Please take extra time to say a prayer for the families of the soldiers that have given their lives for our freedom since last Memorial Day.

The Class of 2020

This week’s Senior Spotlight falls on Logan Ott, son of Tom and Diane Ott from Montoursville High School. Logan will graduate with a 3.9 GPA.

He also served as president of the physics club during his senior year.

His hobbies include listening to music, playing video games and being with friends on the ball fields.

Logan played baseball and football all four years of high school.

He helped lead the football team to two straight D4 AAA district titles in his junior and senior years. The team had a combined 23-5 record those years and lost in the quarter final game his senior year to the eventual AAA Champion Wyoming Area.

Logan helped lead the baseball team to win two district titles over his sophomore and junior year. Those two seasons the team had a combined record of 38-7.

He helped the team at the plate as well as on the mound. His overall record on the mound during his high school career was 17-1. His sophomore season pitching record was 8-1 with a 1.00 ERA as the team’s final loss was in the state semifinal to the eventual AAA state champion Lancaster Catholic. His junior season pitching record was 7-0.

He played club ball for US Elite since he was 12 years old and helped his team to numerous tournament championships as he was able to team up with players from NJ, DE, FL, GA, NY, and VA on those respective teams over the years. Those US Elite teams competed in tournaments in TX, GA, VA, NJ, NY ,MD , OH, WV , NC & PA against quality competition from teams across the country.

Logan was also named in his freshman year to team USA Baseball 14U National Development Program in Cary, NC. There he gained valuable experience being coached by team USA Baseball coaching staff as one of only 28 players in the country selected to participate in the program.

In addition to intrasquad games, players competed in the Junior Prospect Classic, a two-game series between the 2016 15U and 14U teams.

Logan will be attending the University of Maryland to continue his academic and athletic career. The Maryland coaching staff sees Logan as a two-way player in the outfield as well as a LHP.

He will be majoring in computer science.
