What does a social justice organization look like in the 21st century? It looks like an organization that advocates for civil rights and equality in education and employment opportunities, fair wages and non- discriminatory housing practices, just to name a few. We have such an organization right here in Williamsport. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, (NAACP); since its inception in 1909, is the oldest [multicultural] civil rights organization in the country. The Williamsport chapter was named, Lycoming Tri-County NAACP, because it provides services to Lycoming, Clinton and Northumberland counties. In 2009 the unit became inactive, which left a crucial void in the souls of our communities and silenced its collective voice.

In October of 2017, a group of African American women unanimously agreed to reactivate the unit as an established platform to engage adults and educate the youth of the history of civil rights and community leadership. The unit has made steady membership growth, but has not reached the threshold of fifty members to be in compliance with national by-laws. Under the leadership of the acting president, Ms. Lisa E. Williams, an aggressive membership drive was launched to encourage others to participate in this historical civil rights organization. The chapter meets on the third Saturday of each month at Love Unlimited Ministries, 734 West 4th Street in Williamsport; at 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. “We are looking for individuals who are passionate about social justice and would like to make a commitment to serve in the Tri-County chapter,” said one of its members; “to stand in solidarity for equality and justice for all.”

The membership invites all to a Film Screening of Tariq Nisheed’s 4 part documentary series, Hidden Colors. On June 8, 2019, we will spend the day viewing parts 1 and 2, with a suggested donation of $5.00. Lunch will be served. Plan to spend the day in honest conversation about racial injustices and a path to healing and reconciliation. This will be a real look at the issues that keep us divided.
