Two Williamsport Area School District Odyssey of the Mind teams will head to the 2019 World Finals after securing first- and second-place wins at the state round Saturday at Pocono Mountain East Campus.
Eight contending teams from WASD represented Cochran Primary School, Curtin Intermediate School, Williamsport Area Middle School and Williamsport Area High School.
Those advancing to the World Finals are:
Williamsport Area Middle School: First Place, “Leonardo’s Workshop,” coached by Beth Lewis, Liz Manetta and assisted by Matthew Gutberlet. Team members: Olivia Ciabattari, Mia Clark, Sydney Kelley, Lisa Lewis, Ben Manetta and Lizzie Ryder.
Cochran Primary School: Second Place, “Opposites Distract,” coached by Melanie Vail and April Frank. Team members: Emily Frank, Cooper Gutberlet, Brayden Harpster, Chaedyn Lockard, Julisa Martin, Roslyn Perry, and Alex Vail.
While not advancing, the following is a listing of how the six other WASD teams ranked in their respective problems:
Cochran Primary School: Sixth Place, “Leonardo’s Workshop” coached by Rachel Kirk and Spring Moore. Team members: Cooper Gutberlet, Lily Hamilton, Corbin Kirk, Morgan Morse, Libby Smith, and Daniel Turner.
Curtin Intermediate School: Ninth Place, “Hide in Plain Sight,” coached by Dave Richards and Matthew Gutberlet. Team members: Leo Calle, Parker Fox, Naomi Lee, Asher McClelland, Dylana Richards and Victoria Wislar.
Curtin Intermediate School: 12th Place, “Leonardo’s Workshop,” coached by Kristin Adkins and Kat Walter. Team members: Ella Adkins, Albert Campbell, Isabelle Campbell, Xander Flahert, Brandon Walter, Virginia Wislar, and Angus Young.
Williamsport Area Middle School: Eighth Place, “Opposites Distract,” coached by Bret Southard, Denise Southard and Hao Tran. Team members: Reese Kirk, Ross Mahler, Alanna Ramos, Lillyana Sponhouse, Muireann Tran and Tyler Williamson.
Williamsport Area High School: Sixth Place, “Leonardo’s Workshop,” coached by Spring Moore and Matthew Gutberlet. Team members: Jake Belford, Charlotte DeBloois, Hannah Haussmann, Kendall Kelley, Daisy LeBlanc, Matthew Turner and Carlee Weber.
Williamsport Area High School: Fifth Place, “Omer to the Rescue, Again,” coached by Spring Moore and Matthew Gutberlet. Team members: Charlotte DeBloois, Paige Diabelko, Mat Hammond, Daisy LeBlanc, Emily Smith, Katie Turner and Matthew Turner.
The 2019 World Finals is scheduled for May 22-25 at Michigan State University.
This will be the fifth consecutive year WASD teams have competed at the World Finals.
Last year, two teams from Curtin and WAMS were successful in the program’s regional, state and world competitions. Those teams competed at Iowa State University, both ranking in the top 25.
