Gazette and Bulletin: October 11, 1938 – Students “Save” Esther Herron in Fire Tests at Transeau School Building

Esther Herron, the young girl who lost her leg last June while retrieving a ball beneath a freight train, need have no fear of fire while she is in school.

Tests conducted by Fire Chief Michael E. Clark and several fire captains at the Transeau building yesterday revealed that Esther’s classmates are prepared to help her in an emergency.  When the alarm hit, two boys sitting near the girl, stepped to her side, clasped hands, forming a swing and carried her to safety. The entire performance was handled with such precision that the trio was in step with the rest of the room as it left the building.

Chief Clark and his captains were visiting the schools in the interest of Fire Prevention Week. The response to the alarms pleased the officials. After the alarms Chief Clark spoke to the students on the importance to the students of sending a fire alarm in quickly and in the correct way. He requested each pupil to go home and clean up fire hazards and then prepare a written report and turn it in to the teacher on Friday.
The fire chief will look over the reports with the idea of enlisting students in the Junior Firemen’s Preventive League.

Today the firemen will inspect the remaining schools, Williamsport Hospital and the Home for the Friendless. In visiting the manufacturing plants this week efforts will be made to meet the night watchmen and instruct them in quick and proper ways of sending in a fire alarm.
