Gazette and Bulletin: August 8, 1928 – Tourists Annually Spend Large Sum for Car Storage

Over half a million dollars in cash is left in Williamsport for the storage of cars each year by tourists who spend a night or two here as they are motoring through the county. In addition to this figure the tourists spend another large amount for gasoline, oil, washing of their cars and repair work.

Probably a dozen large garages make a specialty of storing cars overnight. The Susquehanna Trail Garage at West Third and Hepburn streets, has a capacity for several hundred cars. Some nights this large garage is completely filled, especially on Saturdays and Sunday nights. At the present time they have an average of a hundred tourists and traveling salesmen’s cars at night. This concern caters largely to hotel tourist trade. It has several chauffeurs engaged who make their business to call at the hotels for cars in the evening and return them to their owners at the hotels in the morning. There is no extra charge for this service.

Almost all the garages, large and small in the business district are doing a heavy business during this month. Many residents have opened up their homes to tourists and they reap a harvest in keeping boarders overnight. Most of these tourist homes have a good-sized garage and extra income is derived from this source.

During the summer months tourists come to Williamsport from every state in the Union. Canada has sent an unusually large number of tourists over the Susquehanna Trail. Most of these spend overnight here. It is an interesting study to visit one of the large garages on a Saturday night to make a note of the different makes of motor cars stored away along with the name of the state the car represents.
