Dorothy M. Roeckel, 94

Dorothy M. Roeckel, 94, of South Williamsport, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at The Williamsport Home. She was born in Williamsport on May 30, 1924, and was the daughter of the late Clarence A. and Leila Miller Saar.

She was the wife of the late Bernard T. Roeckel who she married on April 15, 1950, and shared 59 years of marriage. Dorothy, a 1942 graduate of Williamsport High School, joined the war effort as a chemist at the Susquehanna Ordnance Depot and subsequently worked at the Uniroyal rubber factory in Passaic, N.J. After the war she married Bernard and started her family while working for Weldon’s Pajama Company and Sylvania for 15 years. Following her retirement in 1985 she and Bernard enjoyed traveling and she became an avid quilter. She was a member of the Tiaghadaton Quilt Guild. She was also a faithful member of St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church.

Dorothy is survived by four children, Christine (Kirby) Shimp, of South Williamsport; Kathleen Schumacher (George, deceased), of Carlisle; Elizabeth (Scott) Peters, of Merion Station; John (Mary) Roeckel, of Chalfont; a brother, Edward Saar, of Williamsport; a sister, Leila Johns, of Montoursville; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Amanda, Marnie, Emily, Amy, Colin, Kyle, J.B. and Erik; and by four great-grandchildren, Lilly, Luke, Sean and Liam.

She is predeceased by her husband Bernard T. Roeckel, May 1, 2009, a brother, Clarence Saar, and a sister, Kathryn M. Eck, July 7, 2017.

Family and friends are invited to attend Dorothy’s viewing on Friday, Feb. 15, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Crouse Funeral Home and Cremation Services 133 E. Third St., Williamsport.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, at 11 a.m. at St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church 800 W. Central Ave., South Williamsport. Interment will follow at the Resurrection Cemetery of Montoursville.
