NAACP

W.E.B. Du Bois, Ida B. Wells-Barnett and Mary White Ovington founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), in 1909. There were other concerned citizens that stood together with them to face the challenges of the Negros. This interracial organization worked together to abolish segregation and discrimination in housing, education, employment and voters suppression.

Today there are chapters in communities across the nation; building relationships, developing new friendships and coalition to protect the civil rights of all people. Our chapter in Williamsport has been dormant for nine years. Onyx, a local group of African American women decided unanimously that having an organization that focus on protecting the rights of African Americans is a step towards bringing about equality for all.

It has been a challenge to get white and black people to understand that the NAACP is not a black organization; it is a CIVIL RIGHTS organization. We all have equal rights under the constitution.

We welcome all people who are serious about developing a community that protects all of its citizens. Join us on March 15, 2018 at 150 Church St., Williamsport in the Winston Room. from 5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. for our monthly “Meet’n Greet” and membership drive. We are expecting to collect memberships while building friendships across racial lines. This is the perfect opportunity to have meaningful unscripted conversation with people who live in the community.

Lycoming Tri-County NAACP serves Lycoming, Clinton and Northumberland counties. It is the goal of the women of Onyx to have a healthy and functioning adult unit, with the ultimate goal of supporting our youth as they grow into the future leaders of America.
