Midwinter Wardrobe Remix

Technically, we have not yet reached the midwinter season, but I’m sure all of us are pretty much done with the cold, ice, and snow at this point. However, no matter how “over it” we feel, we still must endure another 2-3 months of winter weather. So, now is a good time to take inventory of your wardrobe to review, reorganize, and restore your cold weather gear. Now, while it may seem frivolous to do a closet cleanout at this time, it’s really a matter of function. Taking stock of sweaters for holes, coats that need to be cleaned, tights with runs, and finding space for any new items from the holidays, are very practical reasons why now is the perfect time for a wardrobe remix.

Like any closet cleanout, you want to have a plan of attack. I like to start with sweaters, checking each piece for holes, tears, pilling, and those that have lost their shape. Those that can be repaired I set aside, those that are beyond hope I toss, and those I’m just plain sick of/no longer fit go to the donation/yard sale bin. Yes, winter seems like an odd time to start thinking about your summer yard sale, but if you have the space to store your “inventory,” you’ll save yourself some work come June.

It doesn’t really matter how you start a midwinter clothing cleanout. The point is to assess your cold weather garments to see which pieces need attention. Now is a great time to get your overcoat to the dry cleaners for a midseason refresh. Also, when was the last time you washed those snow pants? How are your winter socks holding up? Don’t forget to check in on your hats, gloves, and scarves. If you can repair things, great. If not, get rid of them and buy replacements. There are great deals on winter wear out there, as stores want to make room for spring inventory.

If you are feeling ambitious, you can also reorganize your closet to see you through the rest of the winter by putting your heaviest pieces up front and moving those mid-weight items towards the back. Also, set aside pieces that aren’t fitting at the moment. Whether from too much holiday ham or because your January detox is going gangbusters, garments that are too small or too big need to be taken out of your rotation. This doesn’t mean you won’t wear these pieces in the future, just that, for now, set them aside, so they don’t take up space for clothes that do fit.

Regardless of fit, or condition, there may be pieces you are just sick of wearing — looking at you, gray turtleneck! If so, pack them away, then take some of that Christmas money and treat yourself to a purple or printed turtleneck! Again, there are major sales going on, and cold-weather clothes are deeply discounted. Sometimes, a style boost is just the thing to see you through these next two months of dreary days and slick sidewalks.

Speaking of fit, if you have growing kids in your home, you should definitely check in on their winter apparel. Make sure boots, jeans, jackets — all of it — still fits with enough room to see them through the season. Don’t forget hand-me-downs! One child’s too-small flannel is another child’s new favorite shirt. Well, maybe not favorite, but hey, if it’s warm and it fits, it’s new-to-them! Lastly, start a list of things they’ll need for the spring. Keep in mind school activities like field trips and sports.

Hopefully, taking a winter inventory of your clothes won’t be too much of a chore, will free up some space in your closet, and help you survive the rest of the cold season. If you are in need of new apparel but have a tight budget, don’t forget that thrift stores are also a great resource.
