Fall Food, Fun and Fashion…

So Jimmy and I were talking and we agreed that while we are sorry to see summer coming to end, we are already looking forward to fall foods!

Pumpkin pie, hot cider, and fresh apples are just a few of the things I look forward to this time of year.

We have a few fall recipes throughout the paper this week and Jimmy has a lot of great fall food ideas for you, so I thought I would take on some great fall activities.

I have covered ad nauseam that I am not really an outdoorsy kind of girl, but there are a few activities that will get me outside, especially in the fall. I have a whole checklist of things that I would like to do this fall. So here we go…

You can’t beat sitting outside with friends around a bonfire on a cool fall night. A little hot cider, or mulled wine pairs perfectly with good friends and a good fire. Plus, you know – marshmallows. I. Love. Marshmallows.

We are also quickly approaching the time for corn mazes. My friends, husband and I checked out Snyder’s Farm’s maze last year and I can’t wait to go back this year. We had a great time finding our way through the maze and finished the evening with – wait for it – marshmallows!

It’s a bit early yet, but I am already planning a trip to a pumpkin patch. There is just something about finding and picking that perfect pumpkin – just to hack it up as I feebly attempt to turn my pumpkin into something cool.

I also have a new activity on my fall check list this year. I really want to go apple picking. Apples are one of my favorite fruits so I am really want to make a concerted effort this year to go pick apples myself. That leads me to also wanting to make my own apple cider. I just have to figure out, how exactly one does that!

Taking a hayride is on the list too. I want to cuddle up with my hubby and some hot chocolate (with marshmallows!) and see whatever it is you see on a hayride – I’ve never actually been on one that wasn’t haunted.

I love photography, so I am looking forward to getting out and getting some great pictures of the leaves turning. Say what you want about our area, but little beats the views around here come October. I’m thinking that there will be some gorgeous pics to be had at the Overlook up 15.

There is still time to catch some time on the river with the Hiawatha. I can only imagine that a late September/early October cruise would be the perfect way to see the autumn leaves.

So that really just leaves (no pun intended) one last detail…

What am I going to wear while I do all these fun fall festivities?

I am always good with the fall staple of boots, sweaters and my favorite skinnies – and these are great for the outdoorsy activities, but what about those times when it’s less about being outside and more trying out the fall craft beer selections around town?

Well I am seeing that trends are moving away from the skinny silhouette and back into a wider leg. I am currently on the hunt for the perfect pair of boyfriend jeans. I am trying to find a pair that is lightweight. I don’t love heavy denim and I feel like the boyfriend style needs the ability to ‘hang’ – no stiff, heavy denim allowed. I love seeing this paired with a nice heel. There is something about the mix of the somewhat masculine cut of the boyfriend jean and the femininity of a nice pump.

The wide leg isn’t just for jeans. All trousers are moving in that direction and a lot are being paired with more feminine pieces (Throw back to Annie Hall anyone?). Cuff those bad boys up and pair them with a strappy heel or take it to a different level and throw on a pair of old school Keds or Chucks.

I mentioned in the spring that I was seeing a resurgence of some very 1990s trends. In particular the chunky heeled shoe. While I don’t think this is something I see myself doing, there are a lot of clunky loafers to be had and they are pairing well with the wider leg, cropped trousers.

As my husband can attest to – I LOVE purses. All shapes and sizes and colors and textures and materials. Cheap, expensive, real, knock-off – as long as it is cute I will carry it. My favorite of the fall purse trend isn’t just cute, it is down right fabulous. Hard-shell clutches. Oooooh I can’t wait to find the perfect one! These clutches are a fantastic way to dress up the dark/drab trap we all tend to fall into during the colder months. I am picturing dark jeans, a printed top, heels and an amazing hard-shell clutch in a super bright color or with an amazing pattern.

So while there are still a few weeks of warm weather to go, I am beginning to be ready for the cooler weather ahead. Lots to do, lots to see and lots to shop for.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!
