Summer Skin Care

     
 

Summer can bring a lot of wreckage to your skin if you aren’t careful, and sun damage is just the start.
Chlorine, salt, sweat, and even sunscreen can all wreak havoc on your skin. Here are some summer facial masks that can help un-do some of that summer damage.
If excess sweat and humidity has your skin looking a little dull, perk it up with this coffee mask.
What You’ll Need:
1/2 cup ground coffee beans (you can grind your own or buy pre-ground)
1/2 cup, unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup of unsweetened whole milk (if you aren’t a dairy person, sub for unsweetened almond milk)
1 tbsp of lemon juice (for dry skin, try olive or almond oil)
1 tbsp of honey (for extra oily or acne prone skin, use additional lemon juice here instead of honey)

Benefits of the Ingredients:
Coffee Beans – Reduces inflammation and redness, and the appearance of under eye circles. As an exfoliator, removes dead skin and “wakes up” a tired complexion.
Cocoa Powder – A good source of antioxidants; repairs damage due to environmental pollutants and free radicals. Contains high levels of sulfur (great for fighting acne).
Milk – It is said that Cleopatra bathed in milk to give her skin a healthy glow. Lactic acid exfoliates, while natural enzymes help to smooth skin. Amino acids keep skin hydrated.
Lemon Juice – Acts as an exfoliant. Contains natural vitamin C to lighten, tighten and brighten. Great for regulating oil production.
Honey – A natural humectant that locks in moisture.
Directions:
In your bowl, mix the finely ground coffee beans with the cocoa powder. Add in the milk; stir until it creates a paste. For a thicker paste, use less milk. Fold in lemon juice and honey. Apply to skin and let dry (up to 20 minutes).

Sweat and sunscreen can make even the most well-behaved skin become acne prone. Stave off break-outs with this mask.
Anti-Acne Mask
What you need:
2 tbsp pure honey
1 tsp cinnamon
1 wedge of fresh lemon juice
Directions:
Combine honey, cinnamon, and lemon juice in a small bowl. Warm the honey a little (microwave or hot water bath), if needed, to help with stirring. Mix until you get a smooth and uniform paste.
Gently massage the paste with your index and middle fingertips on clean face, avoiding the eye area. Make sure to remove any makeup, moisturizer, sunscreen, etc on face before applying.

Nothing says summer quite like strawberry shortcake. Before all those strawberries go bad, whip yourself up a strawberry mask! Strawberries are full of antioxidants and salicylic acid that are great for clearing skin and keep your skin younger looking and feeling!
Strawberry Facial:
5-6 ripe strawberries
2 tbsp ground almonds
3 tbsp yogurt
Using a coffee grinder or blender grind the almonds into crumbs.  In a separate bowl mash the strawberries together (really well).  Once the strawberries are a good mashed consistency, add yogurt and almonds and mix the whole thing together until you have a nice consistency.
Spread the strawberry mixture all over your face and let it sit for about 20 minutes.  Go watch an episode of one of your favorite shows (a short show, no Grey’s Anatomy or movie marathons today, sorry) while the facial has time to soak into your skin.
Wash mask off with lukewarm water.
Masks are a quick and easy way to rollback summer damage. If you are short on time and watching your budget, here is a simple, two-ingredient mask. Ready? Baking soda and water. That’s it! Mix three parts baking soda to one part water. Apply to skin and let dry. This mask can be a little drying so make sure you moisturize well after you wash it off!
