Gridiron Magic – Part 1

with: Jamie Spencer

The Williamsport Area Football Millionaires are off to their best start in recent memory. Yes. Coach Crews and his talented squad is currently 5-0 and they are getting some statewide pub. The Cherry and White are really playing well. Williamsport proved that they can compete against the big boys after an impressive 35-22 win at Wyoming Valley West a few weeks back. My man Jimmy Coles now has our beloved Millionaires on top of his weekly Super Sixteen Poll.
I've had the chance to call the Millionaires via PASPORTSLIVE twice this young season. Coach Paul McGinn and I became instant fans after they laid the smackdown on Mifflin County. So my boys struggled against Shikellemy this past week. They trailed 13-7 at half. Perhaps the Port took their opponents lightly or weren't mentally right. Regardless. Williamsport played their worst half of the season and only trailed by six points. The Millionaires made some nice adjustments and literally came out on fire. Their super sophomore Treyson Potts took a pitch the first play in the third quarter 80 yards for a touchdown and there was no looking back. The Millionaires steamrolled the Braves 49 to 19. The defense was relentless and we witnessed an offensive explosion in the second stanza. Its now safe to say the gridiron magic is back in Billtown.
"We are extremely focused this year," Junior Kurt Danneker explained. "Our coaches do a great job in keeping us grounded. We can't look ahead. Just concentrate on our upcoming game. They are always challenging us to be great in the moment."
The 6'5” 320 lb. Danneker is a HUGE part of the Millionaires' successes. You see there is nothing small about this humble giant. Now Kurt doesn't get as much love as his skilled teammates. But as long as Williamsport is winning some games that is quite okay with this three year starting offensive lineman who also plays the upright base.
"Those guys make all of us look good. Even our coaching staff," Danneker chuckled. "I can't tell you how blessed we are to have guys like Treyson [Potts] Isaiah [Hankins] and crew. They work extremely hard at their craft and push us to get even better. They make my job on the O line a whole lot easier."
Treyson Potts has been outstanding. The young stud is still area's leader with 870 yards and 12 touchdowns. I tried to compute his yards per carry but my excel program keeps coming up with an error. It's ridiculously off the charts folks. Senior QB Isaiah Hankins is having a great season too. He leads the area with a 210.2 passer rating. Please don't ask me what that means, but Isaiah throws a lot of completions for some crazy yards. These two cats are awfully good.
Williamsport has always had talent and the two I mentioned are truly special. Sure they can help win a few games but the successes of this year's Millionaire Football TEAM is found in a five letter word. The coaching staff preaches it and the players now believe in it. PRIDE. Maybe it's time for us fans to buy in. More later.
"We take great PRIDE in our football tradition," Big Kurt explained. "At the beginning of the season Williamsport had 690 program victories. Our goal was to get 700. Each opponent is just another number. No one is bigger than the TEAM. We still have a lot of football to play but everyone is on the same page. We are still hungry and we are out to put Williamsport Football back on the state map."
Kurt Danneker is well on his way. The O line captain was a great interview. This young monster gets it and our conversation was quite refreshing. He comes from good stock. I was pleased to learn that several big time schools are currently courting this 6'5” 320 lb. humble and polite junior. Kurt has already received high interest from Penn State, Rutgers, Syracuse and many others. A true team player. Yes. #76 is a HUGE part of Williamsport's successes. Kurt Danneker is doing all he can to return his Millionaires to glory. His TEAM has brought back the gridiron magic back to the playing field. Well done kid. Go Port. Tune in next week for more. Cheers.
